Every face tells a story. This one is yours.
Making Faces is the second course in the Against the Grain series — and it begins with one question: What am I facing right now? Not a photograph to copy nor a pattern to follow. Just the question, a pile of fabric, and the willingness to see what the cloth already knows.
Over four 90-minute Zoom classes, you will build a collage quilt face from the ground up. Backgrounds, shapes, features, hair, expression, and something that makes a face feel alive. You will troubleshoot, experiment, and break every rule you just learned. You will leave with a completed face that is entirely yours…and the tips to finish it as a wall hanging, a pillow, a bag, or whatever it wants to become.
Class 1 — We will focus on foundations: the question, the background, the basic architecture of a face in cloth.
Class 2 — Time to learn about and experiment with features, hair, troubleshooting, and getting wild with what you begin to build.
Class 3 — This class is all about rule-breaking. The one where things get real. Pink Hair? Eyes that don’t line up? You go for the feeling of what you are facing, not the literal expression.
Class 4 — Wrapping it up! Tips on quilting your face, finishing options, and the answer your fabric found to the question you started with. A time to share what you learned and leave ready to finish.
Prerequisite: First Cut class or equivalent comfort with free-form collage quilting and fusible adhesives. No drawing skills required. No experience with faces required.
All skill levels welcome. Whether you have been quilting for twenty years or twenty minutes — if you are ready to play, you belong here.
