Against the Grain

Quilting Retreat

Three days. No map. Just cloth and instinct.

There is no path but the path you make.

Imagine giving yourself three days to do nothing but create and experiment..

Imagine arriving at a place where the prairie meets the eastern hardwood forest — 80 acres of quiet, beauty, and room to think — and spending your time there with fabric, color, instinct, and a teacher who will not tell you what to make but will ask you exactly the right questions to help you find it yourself.

Imagine cutting without a pattern. Collaging without a plan. Following the fabric somewhere you didn’t expect to go — and loving what you find when you get there.

This is the Against the Grain Quilting Retreat. And it is unlike any quilting experience you have had before.

What is an Against the Grain Quilting Retreat?

Three days of immersive, personal, free-form quilting — in a beautiful, nurturing home surrounded by gardens, wildlife, deep woods, and peaceful prairie grasses. Every retreat is completely tailored to you: where you are as a quilter, what you want to explore, and what you are ready to let go of.

We will work in the Against the Grain tradition — no patterns, no photo tracing, no ruler guilt. We will follow fabric, color, and intuition. We will make beautiful messes and see what they become. And alongside the making, we will talk — about creativity, about intuition, about what it means to trust what you see instead of what you planned.

You do not need to have taken any Against the Grain courses to come. You just need to be ready to experiment and play.

Where does the retreat take place?

Near Lawrence, Kansas, USA, your retreat is held in a rural setting on 80 acres of land. The nearest airport is Kansas City, MO, approximately one hour from the retreat site. The land includes an organic vegetable garden, hiking trails, a lake, big sky, and abundant wildlife. You will have your own room. Privacy, quiet, and beauty — and a fully equipped creative space to work in.

You stay in my home in a private bedroom.

What will you do?

Your three days will be a balance of making, reflecting, exploring, and resting. No two retreats look exactly alike — this is yours to shape. Here is what is available to you:

  • Immersive free-form collage quilting — guided, hands-on, and completely your own
  • One-on-one creating and coaching time with Gina: questions, coaching, creative direction, and the occasional well-timed nudge
  • Immersion in any Against the Grain technique that calls to you — collage, faces, landscapes, journal quilting. Combining traditional piecing with free-form collage. Or experiment with deconstructing and reconstructing (yes, that means cutting up quilts). So many possibilities.
  • Quiet working time — just you, the fabric, and wherever it leads
  • Nature-based rest: hiking trails, the lake, the garden, the prairie
  • Nourishing food and nourishing conversation in equal measure

Who is this retreat for?

  • Quilters at any level who are ready to experiment and learn
  • Experienced quilters who feel quietly restless with patterns and want to find out what else is possible
  • Anyone who has taken an Against the Grain class and wants to go deeper — with time, space, and one-on-one guidance
  • Beginners who want to start the intuitive way: using instinct, not just instruction
  • Anyone who makes things and needs three days to remember why they love it
  • Individuals, creative partners, or friends who want to share the experience — maximum three people

What makes this different from other quilting workshops?

Most quilting workshops give you a place to work on your UFOs in a group setting. Or offer instruction using a project, a pattern, and a set of steps to follow. These retreats are great!

And, Against the Grain retreat gives you something different: time, space, attention, and a guide who will not tell you what to make but will help you trust what you already know. You will leave with work that is entirely yours — and with a way of working that inspires  you long after the retreat is over.

Gina is also a trained personal coach. Which means that alongside the making, she asks questions. The kind that unlock things. The kind that sends you back to the design wall with more clarity than you arrived with. This combination — master quilter and master coach — is what makes a retreat with Gina unlike anything else you will find.

Testimonial

I just completed a 3 day retreat with Gina. My goal was to feel inspired and to reconnect with my imagination. My goal has been achieved with Gina’s expert help! Being in Gina’s presence and in her home is inspiring. She is surrounded by art and all of her imaginative projects. In Gina’s presence I remembered how to play, how to let go of the results and how to truly let myself create with my own imagination. What a gift!
