There is no path but the path you make.
Antonio Machado
Imagine giving yourself three days to do nothing but create and experiment..
Imagine arriving at a place where the prairie meets the eastern hardwood forest — 80 acres of quiet, beauty, and room to think — and spending your time there with fabric, color, instinct, and a teacher who will not tell you what to make but will ask you exactly the right questions to help you find it yourself.
Imagine cutting without a pattern. Collaging without a plan. Following the fabric somewhere you didn’t expect to go — and loving what you find when you get there.
This is the Against the Grain Quilting Retreat. And it is unlike any quilting experience you have had before.
Three days of immersive, personal, free-form quilting — in a beautiful, nurturing home surrounded by gardens, wildlife, deep woods, and peaceful prairie grasses. Every retreat is completely tailored to you: where you are as a quilter, what you want to explore, and what you are ready to let go of.
We will work in the Against the Grain tradition — no patterns, no photo tracing, no ruler guilt. We will follow fabric, color, and intuition. We will make beautiful messes and see what they become. And alongside the making, we will talk — about creativity, about intuition, about what it means to trust what you see instead of what you planned.
You do not need to have taken any Against the Grain courses to come. You just need to be ready to experiment and play.
Near Lawrence, Kansas, USA, your retreat is held in a rural setting on 80 acres of land. The nearest airport is Kansas City, MO, approximately one hour from the retreat site. The land includes an organic vegetable garden, hiking trails, a lake, big sky, and abundant wildlife. You will have your own room. Privacy, quiet, and beauty — and a fully equipped creative space to work in.
You stay in my home in a private bedroom.

Your three days will be a balance of making, reflecting, exploring, and resting. No two retreats look exactly alike — this is yours to shape. Here is what is available to you:
Most quilting workshops give you a place to work on your UFOs in a group setting. Or offer instruction using a project, a pattern, and a set of steps to follow. These retreats are great!
And, Against the Grain retreat gives you something different: time, space, attention, and a guide who will not tell you what to make but will help you trust what you already know. You will leave with work that is entirely yours — and with a way of working that inspires you long after the retreat is over.
Gina is also a trained personal coach. Which means that alongside the making, she asks questions. The kind that unlock things. The kind that sends you back to the design wall with more clarity than you arrived with. This combination — master quilter and master coach — is what makes a retreat with Gina unlike anything else you will find.
